Bout Recap: Naptown Warning Belles 217 vs. Mid Michigan Derby Girls 20
– November 21, 2009
– Mt. Morris, MI
– by Rusty Wheeler

The Naptown Roller Girls “B” team, the Naptown Warning Belles, had no trouble with the Mid Michigan Derby Girls on November 21, whipping the MMDG 217-20.

Naptown was in total charge of the game, rolling out to a 30-0 lead after only two jams, then leading at halftime by 103-15. Of the game’s 31 total jams, Mid-Michigan could only score in four different jams. Naptown had 22 lead jammers to only 8 for Mid Michigan.

1st Half
Naptown jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the game’s opening jam with Racer Xtasy scoring a double grand slam while taking advantage of the Mid Michigan jammer, Misty MotorBoatin’, who had been sent to the penalty box. Then Naptown’s Dora the Destroyer skated to a quadruple grand slam 20-0 jam 2, and the game was never in doubt after that. Maiden America only scored a 4-0 win for Naptown in jam 3 as she was sent to the box herself, although the Naptown blockers totally contained the MMDG jammer. Mid Michigan finally got on the scoreboard in jam 4 when Puddin DaHurton got lead jammer and a 5-0 grand slam win when Naptown’s jammer, Maiden America, was still in the box to start that jam.

Naptown got lead jammer in 10 of the first 11 jams, and were leading 87-5 after 13 jams. Mid Michigan had a couple of good jams late in the half when Short E Fuse won jam 14 by 5-1, and Misty MotorBoatin’ won jam 15 by 5-0. But then Naptown’s Racer Xtasy came back with a 15-0 triple grand slam to finish off the half and stake Naptown to their 103-15 halftime lead. Naptown’s Racer Xtasy had also had a 13-0 win in jam 7, and Dora the Destroyer had a 2nd 20-0 quadruple slam win in jam 8. Dora had 41 points in the half, and Racer had 38 points.

2nd Half
The 2nd half didn’t go any better for Mid Michigan, and it fact it was worse as Naptown won the 2nd half by a 119-5 margin. Naptown jammer Dora the Destroyer rang up two 15-0 jams, Racer Xtasy had 20-0 and 15-0 jams, and even team captain Valerie Hurtinelli had a 19-0 jam win. Mid Michigan’s Misty MotorBoatin’ did manage to win jam 5 by a 5-0 count (with a slam of her own), but that was all the scoring Mid Michigan could muster in the half.

Mid-Michigan’s Short E Fuse was ejected from the game in jam 11 for excessive trips to the penalty box. Overall, Mid Michigan lost jammers to the box 7 times in the game, while Naptown only lost 3 jammers to the sin bin.

Afterthoughts
Mid Michigan is still a new league, and their inexperience hurt them. Naptown’s Warning Belles also had some skaters with little to no game experience, but their overall team experience edge showed clearly. Naptown’s blockers controlled just about every pack. They split the pack efficiently at times (always trapping an opposing blocker to make the split legal, plus they repeatedly recycled their blockers past the MMDG jammers. Just about every time the MMDG jammer was about to get out of the pack (usually on her initial pass), the last Naptown blocker would force the jammer to go wide to the outside of the track, then the other Naptown blockers would sneak by on the inside. At times when MMDG’s blockers were controlling the front of the pack and were keeping the Naptown jammer from passing, that’s when Naptown would slow the rear of the pack, then the MMDG blockers had to let the Naptown jammer by lest they get called for out of play penalties (and there were a few of those penalty calls). Naptown also never let an opposing jammer have a free pass to the inside of the track.

There were only 31 jams in this game. Most jams went the full two minutes or close to it as with Naptown in charge of most jams with lead jammer and cruising around to easy points, by and large their jammers had no need to call of the jam. Only in a few jams did one team or the other need their lead jammer to call off the jam to prevent the opposing jammer from scoring first.

Mid Michigan does have an upcoming game against the Glass City Rollers, a league with about the same amount of experience as MMDG. In fact, MMDG defeated Glass City back in February, so it will be interesting to see how the two leagues fare versus each other in the upcoming contest.

Statistics
Naptown’s Racer Xtasy led all jammers with 76 points in only 8 jams with 6 leads and 14 grand slams. Dora the Destroyer also had a fine game with 71 points in only 6 jams with 4 leads and 14 slams. Other Naptown jammers were: Maiden America (24 pts, 7 jams, 5 leads, 1 slam); Valerie Hurtinelli (20 pts, 2 jams, 2 leads, 3 slams); Dazy Disaster (15 pts, 3 jams, 3 leads, 3 slams); Trauma-Lina (9 pts, 1 jam, 1 lead, 1 slam); Old Broad (1 pt, 1 jam, 1 lead); Ima Hurchu (1 pt, 1 jam, 1 lead); Devil Woman (0 pts, 1 jam); Strawberry Jam (0 pts, 1 jam).

Mid Michigan was led by Misty MotorBoatin’ with 10 points in 11 jams with 4 leads and 1 slam. Other jammers were: Puddin DaHurton (5 pts, 4 jams, 2 leads, 1 slam); Short E Fuse (5 pts, 8 jams, 1 lead); Betty KrackHer (0 pts, 2 jams); Valletta Vendetta (0 pts, 5 jams, 1 lead).

While I don’t have access to any blocking stats, the blockers I noticed the most were Ima Hurchu and Trauma-Lina for Naptown, and Kay OTIC and Betty KrackHer for Mid Michigan.

Future
Naptown returns to action on Saturday, December 5, with a home game versus the Burning River Roller Girls. This is a double header. with each league’s B-team skating before the A-teams go at it in the 2nd game. Interestingly, the Naptown Warning Belles will make a return visit to the Flint, Michigan area with a game against the Flint City Derby Girls on January 10.

Mid Michigan travels to Toledo, Ohio, for a game against the Glass City Rollers on Saturday, December 19. Glass City will be trying to avenge a 99-82 loss to Mid Michigan back on February 21.
